入围华沙电影节纪录片竞赛 In September 2017, Hurricane Maria pummelled the island of Puerto Rico. However, it isn't the forces of nature that have done the most damage to the 3.5 million American citizens who live here, but a history of economic exploitation, forced dependency and systemic racism coming from the United States. The island, which many see as the last colony in the Western Hemisphere, is still a US unincorporated territory. The film traces the life of Harvard graduate Juan Segarra who, knowing the history of his island and its relations with the USA, becomes a member of Los Macheteros. This Porto Rican independence movement wants to achieve its goals through armed combat. Juan is aware that the struggle for a free Puerto Rico will lead to either jail or death. A moving story about the universal human need to fight for one’s identity.
