Jacques Demy (June 5, 1931 – October 27, 1990) was one of the most approachable filmmakers to appear in the wake of the French New Wave. Uninterested in the formal experimentation of Alain Resnais, or the political agitation of Jean-Luc Godard, Demy instead created a self-contained fantasy world closer to that of François Truffaut, drawing on musicals, fairytales and the golden age of Hollywood. This short was made while the director was still a student, so there's no imdb entry for it, and generally scarce info around. A french review follows, for those who are able to read it: Les Horizons morts (1951) : premier film vraiment personnel du Jacquot, c'est une réalisation de fin d'études qui vaut vraiment le coup. On y trouve déjà ce mélange d'espoir et de noirceur qui fera sa marque plus tard, à travers le portrait d'un jeune homme (Demy lui-même, sobre) bouleversé par une rupture et tenté par le suicide. On suit ses égarements moraux durant une nuit : gestes désabusés (on passe devant un miroir en se frottant la tête), ennui (on fume sa clope sur un lit de chambre de bonne) ou tentations fatales (on fait couler un mystérieux liquide sombre dans un verre).
